Do people use this program? I’m thinking about learning Japanese. I saw it at Best Buy and wanted to grab it, but they only had the beginner level. Other languages have levels from 1 to 5 or higher, so maybe I’ll buy it online for a better set.

It's a useful tool for mastering foreign languages. It can replace a traditional instructor, though it's best suited for learning specific phrases and basic kanji. I recommend starting with the level 1 package before moving on to more advanced options.

It's stupid and useless. It's the Norton AV of language learning. If you want to learn how to say I have a fork under the red table, it's fine, but otherwise don't waste your money. You take (a) class(es), use the free grammar resources available online, become familiar with more content of your goal language, and later attempt to communicate. You need to be interested enough to be able to teach it to yourself. Rosetta Stone is worthless.

The question is clear—would you prefer better fluency? The difficulty level remains uncertain.

I completed formal Japanese studies for six years... mastering a language you rarely use daily is challenging, at most you can grasp basic dialogue in anime and dramas. I don’t enjoy Rosetta Stone—I used it for Spanish 12 years ago and it helped with my trips to Spain. Give it a shot if you like the language; you can always visit your nearest Japan Foundation center. Learning Japanese there is very affordable.

Gotcha. Mostly I was worried that (for the $) all level 1 would give me is the ability to say "hi, bye, where is the bathroom, etc"
