The pilot hole on your side panel is damaged, so the screw can't properly thread or tighten. You considered welding the hole closed and creating a new one. Others suggested similar approaches—maybe using a different method or material to repair it.

You can secure a nut by applying adhesive and employing a threaded screwdriver.

Could we increase the screw size instead? A rivet nut in the situation would complicate things a lot. It’s probably wiser to skip that hole entirely and drill a new one nearby.
