I’m connecting my network back to the TP-Link router because it supports VPN and DDNS features, and I still can reach my internal network. I switched back mainly due to similarities with Pfsense and Opnsense. Pfsense is more complex but once mastered its interface becomes clearer; Opnsense offers a simpler layout overall, though importing OpenVPN on Linode remains tricky. Pfsense handles VPN certificates better. I’ve connected my Opnsense device to another computer to maintain the main network without disruption. What’s your experience switching from Pfsense to Opnsense? How has it impacted your home network for gaming or streaming services?
It shouldn't really affect performance since both run on the same OS, though OPNsense might offer newer features that could improve speed or cause minor issues. The choice comes down to personal preference. I’ve considered switching to OPNsense, but it feels unnecessary because pfSense already meets my needs and a simpler interface is subjective once you’re comfortable with one. It’s more about ease of use for someone unfamiliar with either.
It's accurate, I've been experimenting with OPNsense and noticed more sophisticated capabilities. Features like Zenarmor and Adguard Integration are now available. Previously, when I used Pf Sense, these enhancements weren't present. It seems they might be coming soon.
According to SunnyValley (ZenArmor), pfsense doesn't permit long-term use of third-party repositories or packages like ZenArmor. Previously this year I managed to install ZenArmor on pfsense, but had to remove it for troubleshooting and when I tried again last month it kept failing, prompting ZenArmor support to advise me. It seems the issue likely started as a mistaken assumption and was later blocked because of feedback about poor communication. The FAQ still mentions Netgate's lack of strong communication efforts, though it doesn't specify third-party involvement.
