PFSense integrating Google Docs into its firewall settings
I already have PF-Sense operational and running. I manage a metered network with 10GB monthly allowance, so I set up a firewall rule to restrict download speeds. My goal is to add Google Docs before that rule so it doesn’t get slowed down. Since my brother relies on it for schoolwork and prefers smaller file sizes (like YouTube), I’m avoiding loading large documents. The domain 'docs.google.com' requires an IP address, which I obtained from a ping test. When I checked 'youtube.com', the same IP was returned, confirming consistency. If I want to allow Docs Google via an IP rule, it would also permit YouTube access. There’s another way to adjust this configuration?
I believe I did it—I entered alias and created docs_google (name) along with the source docs.google.com. A rule was set up for the alias, and it appears to be functioning on my laptop now. Just wait for him to need it and check if it improves his performance.
Aliases point to one or multiple IP addresses, which means the issue remains the same—YouTube may be permitted even if they use the same IP.
