pfSense equipment options available.
Hello, I've been searching for a router for some time and am considering getting a pfSense unit. I've also been eyeing the Netgate 7100 1U, but its price is quite steep for importing into Australia. While it's not too expensive, it's worth noting that the hardware in the 7100 is around four years old, so I'm curious if there are newer options available. I know it still has solid components, but Intel hasn't been actively developing them recently. I'm open to suggestions and would prefer something more modern and durable, avoiding cheap Chinese brands. Thanks for your assistance!
I've been exploring the setup of a PFSENSE firewall over the past weeks, and from the numerous discussions and forums I've encountered, most suggest using a micro PC to install PFSENSE for several reasons—such as more powerful X86 CPUs and RAM, compatibility with standard PC or laptop parts, easier component replacement, improved cooling, and greater hardware adaptability. ARM-based processors are unreliable for PFSENSE outside their native hardware from Netgate, which is why it isn't supported on Raspberry Pi yet. It's important to note that hardware requirements aren't the same everywhere, so checking forums can help you find suitable options. I've discovered several full micro PC models on Amazon after reviewing forum threads and product reviews, which I intend to try out. Additionally, many recommend a dedicated device for managing wireless settings, so consider keeping your existing router as an Access Point if you have one. Avoid relying solely on routers that support Wi-Fi for your firewall. "Networkchuck" and "Lawrence Systems" offer valuable guidance on PFSENSE configuration.
Being Chinese doesn't affect their durability. Many of us rely on Qotom devices, but they all have a single limitation—they don't support 10Gbps. Right now I connect mine using two Ethernet ports to my switch, allowing me to keep the 500Mbit 5G backup active even when switching to Gigabit FTTP.
