Persistent FPS drops aligning with GPU utilization decreases.
Persistent FPS drops aligning with GPU utilization decreases.
Hey everyone,
I’m facing a really persistent and annoying issue with FPS drops lately. It’s especially noticeable in Elden Ring but also happening in other titles like Hunt: Showdown. My PC is new and powerful, so I expected it to handle these games smoothly.
I’ve outlined the problem and tried several solutions. Here’s a user benchmark link for reference:

During play, I experience random frame freezes where the FPS plummets to just half for a brief moment before returning to normal. This occurs whether V-Sync is enabled or not. When using MSI Afterburner, I noticed several factors contributing to these drops, most notably that "GPU usage, %" consistently falls to 0% or 1%.
I’ve attached some screenshots from the MSI monitoring data, though a more detailed version can be provided if needed. My power supply is a Corsair RMX Series RM650x 650W, which should provide ample power based on my calculations.
I’ve experimented with various fixes I found online—running chkdsk, sfc /scannow, flashing the motherboard BIOS, moving games to an M.2 drive instead of an HDD, adjusting Nvidia settings (High Performance, unlimited shader cache, FPS capped at 59), and performing malware scans.
Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Aengus
Yes, the internet connection also plays a role in performance for always online titles. The results with anti-cheat systems are inconsistent. Due to the wide range of hardware and software setups available, some users see little improvement while others experience more noticeable issues.
UBM findings:
1) High memory consumption. A 16GB setup usually leaves around 10-12GB available.
2) The 970 Evo model has excessive data usage; performance drops noticeably after reaching the 80% mark. It's recommended to maintain usage below that level. Additionally, UBM requires approximately 30GB of free space for its 60-second write test.
3) The SSHD is also operating at full capacity.
These points have been noted. Others might provide more help if needed.
Thank you for the input! I managed to free up some room on the SSD, but I’m not sure it’s the main problem since it should still have plenty of space for a game. During peak times when these drops occur, my memory usage is around 10/16GB, and I don’t think anything is using the HDD at that moment! The MSI Afterburner graphs don’t indicate any caps matching the frame drops either. I did see spikes in network activity—could that be connected to the game lag? Perhaps something like Anti-Cheat is involved?

I don't play those kinds of games, so I don't know how it feels.
