Performing random restarts on a fresh setup
Hello, I assembled a PC for my wife, but it keeps shutting down unpredictably. Mostly it restarts without any error logs. I remember working in a computer shop about 12 years ago, so I’m fairly confident in my setup. Still, I can’t pinpoint the problem. I ran various stress tests—OCCT, memtest, others—but nothing came up. A fresh Windows installation didn’t fix anything. I swapped out the power supply and GPU, both new ones, and even tried a different GPU. Disabling the overclock on RAM didn’t help either. The CPU stays around 70% under load. Recently, the system froze during web browsing and idle tasks, only triggering when I pressed CONTROL. It crashes around 15-20 minutes into a game like Cyberpunk, but not during normal use. I played COD BlackOps 4 and 5 without any interruptions. What might be causing this? No clear signs or patterns so far. Also, boot time was unusually slow—about 10 minutes with a blue screen. That happened after I first turned on the overclock feature. Maybe disabling it could make a difference? My BIOS is up-to-date. Thanks in advance for your help.
Maybe a storage drive failure ? These can happen without warnings. But to find the issue, I recommend you test each component in another computer until you find the ***** one. You already swapped GPU and PSU, I'd go next with the RAM , the CPU and the Boot drive. If nothing turns out defective, you may have to consider that the motherboard is causing the issue. It should be easier to ask for an RMA since this is a new system. Hope that helps.
It seems unusual, so I’d examine everything linked to the system. If you have extra equipment, consider removing all USB devices and using separate keyboards and mice. Unplug speakers, test another power strip and outlet. While the system runs, gently shake the case or lightly tap the power bar—does it shut down? This helps determine if a loose component is the issue. If nothing changes, try next: install RAM on one stick only, then swap to the other. Double-check you’re using the right slots. Update MB BIOS and SSD firmware. Reseat the CPU carefully. If problems persist, it might be RAM or CPU.
Thanks for the updates, I've already changed the bios and firmware on the SSDs. No luck so far. I plan to borrow a PC from a friend and test each component individually, as you advised. Honestly, it seems like there might be a RAM problem. The inability to generate minidumps and the inconsistent shutdowns are concerning. However, it passes all stress tests—it's really frustrating.
