You can perform a clean installation on your USB drive. You don’t necessarily need to upgrade to Windows 10 first—just ensure you have the right product key for Windows 10. If you can install in Windows 8.1, you should be able to use the same product key.

Check if it functions on Windows 7 as well. You still have your CD and box with the product key.

The update process keeps breaking on my system. After rebooting, it jumps to Windows 10 update but freezes, then tries to download Win 7 using the USB drive. It seems the update is working automatically, but I’m unsure if my Wi-Fi adapter will connect properly.

I have saved the driver on my phone and will install it later if necessary.

Are you sure you want to proceed with a clean installation using Windows 8.1 Key?

No, you don't need a product key from Win7 to use the software.

I have two leftover Windows 7 keys ready for a new setup. According to the Microsoft FAQ, you can use an existing license key. I’m planning to give it a try!
