Performances issues
Hello, I hope this message finds you well. I’m a French speaker, so please don’t think I’m too prone to mistakes in my writing. When I purchased the components for my PC, I aimed for the top quality and was confident I had everything right. However, I’ve encountered some issues lately. My computer sometimes freezes unexpectedly, and certain apps like Chrome crash without any apparent reason. The internet connection feels sluggish at times, and opening my laptop alongside it makes things even slower. Task Manager takes a long time to open, but on my least powerful machine it launches instantly. This situation is getting worse, and I’m not sure what’s causing it. My PC is only about a year old. I’ve been very careful with downloads, so a virus seems unlikely. It’s possible I missed installing a major update or selected incompatible parts. Here are my specs:
- Motherboard: ASUS ROG Zenith II Extreme Cooling
- Noctua NH-U14S TR4-SP3
- AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X
- SSD: 2x Samsung 970 EVO Plus (2000GB each)
- HDD: WD Gold 18TB Case
- Graphics: ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti / ROG Strix O11G
- Power supply: Corsair HX1200 (1200W)
- Thermal paste: Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut (1g, 12.50W/m K)
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX (8x, 16GB, DDR4-3600)
Despite having a powerful setup before, things are now unstable. Could someone help me figure out what’s going on?
Power on the system using a Linux USB drive such as Ubuntu or Debian, observe whether issues persist. If they remain, investigate potential hardware problems. Possible causes: 1. Temperature problem – assess if the case overheats, verify fan operation and inspect filters inside the case. 2. Memory issue – remove RAM modules one at a time and test each boot, perform basic benchmarks to evaluate performance. 3. Power source – cautiously check the power supply; notice any burnt odor which may indicate damage.
Processor never exceeded 65; already done that twice without any change; there’s no other scent except the fresh smell of new parts.
start with a Linux distribution and check for identical issues on another operating system
Consider switching to a different motherboard, as there might be a problem with the northbridge.
What BIOS version is installed on that board? Does the issue affect just the virtual machines or also the primary system?
Would you like assistance with connecting to your PC? I've tried all the steps mentioned, but nothing seems to work.
