CPU-5900x GPU-7900xtx - xfx merc Mobo- Asus Prime x570-p RAM- T-Force - 32GB (2x 16) @ 3400mhz PSU- EVGA Supernova 1300 GT Gold SSD- Corsair MP600 Pro 2tb m.2 1440p Ultra / Max settings Hello All, I’m experiencing an odd problem where my CPU and GPU usage falls below 40-60% in many games. Notably in Day Z and Sons of the Forest. In Day Z I usually hit around 200fps, but when focusing on city sections my usage drops to that range and my FPS plummets to about 80 with maps at 30fps. The same happens in Sons of the Forest: in caves or on the beach I get 120-140fps, but in the forest I struggle to exceed 65fps, even though others with similar builds report 90-120fps. With these two cases I’m seeing a frame drop of roughly 40%-80% compared to similar configurations. Other games also show this issue, but those are the two recent ones I’ve noticed. My wife’s older GPU (6800xt) with a 5600x is struggling in dense wooded areas, giving her 10-20 frames less than me, but in open ocean it performs better by about 30 frames. Not sure what’s causing it. I recently switched from a 6900xt to the 7900xtx, and that change also affected my gaming performance—she beat me in video games. Could my CPU be faulty? Is there a motherboard problem? Memory controller might be an issue? I checked power draw during benchmarks and reached maximum values on both components during synthetic tests. Sometimes it hits over 400W on the GPU (normal is around 350), so I’m not sure what’s wrong. Initially, my RAM wasn’t set to 3400 and was sitting at 2800 in the BIOS (adjusting helped a bit but only slightly). Should I change it? Do I need faster RAM? Over 4G is enabled and Smart Access Memory is active. My GPU and CPU are both set to automatic overlock in the Radeon dashboard. Edited March 28, 2023 by ChokolateThunder

Start with the latest driver update. Radeon software often experiences issues (rx 480 has faced similar challenges before)

Unless you're keeping the RAM at default or intend to adjust it yourself, I'd definitely opt for DOCP instead of whatever setting you've chosen. It's uncertain if it'll solve your problems, but it won't cause any harm.

Your 5900x might not be as smooth as the 5600x, especially if you haven't adjusted it properly—it could be adding extra delay when communicating across the infinite fabric compared to the single 5600x. Many of these games aren’t well optimized, which is something the 5800x3d or 7000x3D CPUs and a 13900k can manage much better. Even with 4K resolution on a 4090 and a 7950x3D, I still face CPU limitations in these poorly optimized titles. Another issue is draw calls in games with many players, where every position must be checked each frame. The Ryzen 5000 performs best with 3600MHz CL16/18 RAM, especially considering the cost of DDR4 and the potential for manual tuning.

He has the 7900x and 4080, and I was being pushed around in frames with a forest scene. I might consider moving up to a 5800x3d before it's no longer offered. Thanks for the input—I'll try setting RAM to 3600 and DOCP to compare. Do you know if 3600 is the exact setting or just above it? Edited March 28, 2023 by ChokolateThunder Added my question at the end.

5800x3D depending might not be worth it over just waiting for the 7800x3D and jumping into AM5. PGA after so many years feels so archaic after I've messed with a few AM5 platforms and obviously Intel's LGA for decades. Just something worth considering, the 5800x3D is basically on par with Ryzen 7000 series, where 7000x3D is a jump above that, though not proportionally as good as the 5800x to 5800x3D. 7000x3D being able to clock to 5.5GHz from my experience is quite impressive, especially considering that the 5800x3D is generally a 4.5GHz, maybe 4.7GHz CPU. Ryzen 7000x3D is a good 800MHz faster which does track with 5000 to 7000 gains. Really it depends on how much you're willing to spend, I generally don't recommend a 5800x3D unless you're running Ryzen 3000 or lower with a quality B550/X570 motherboard and at least a 2x16GB 3200MHz kit, aka a substantial gap for CPU gain with no compromises on the motherboard/RAM. Otherwise, you're better off just jumping into AM5 if you can afford to, otherwise dropping $350 on a obsolescent platform isn't the best value, even if its still good in 2023.
