Initially, my latest laptop boasts these specifications: an Intel i7-7500U processor, 8GB of RAM, a 512GB solid-state drive, and an Nvidia Geforce 940MX graphics card. In contrast, my previous laptop featured an Intel i7-4710HQ processor, 16GB of RAM, a 1TB hard disk drive, and an Nvidia Geforce GTX 860M graphics card.

Recently, I acquired the new laptop and installed my games and other applications before attempting to play Fortnite. A significant problem immediately presented itself: the new computer struggled to run Fortnite at epic settings with a maximum frame rate of 8-10 frames per second. Reducing the graphics to high settings resulted in approximately 15 frames per second. After experimenting with numerous configurations for an hour, I discovered a method to achieve stable performance at 50-60 frames per second by utilizing low or medium settings, resulting in a visually underwhelming experience.

My primary concern is why my system cannot smoothly operate this game at higher graphics settings. My older laptop (with the specifications listed above) consistently runs Fortnite on high settings at 30-50 frames per second. I verified that all settings were identical between the two machines, yet the new laptop simply refuses to maintain similar frame rates. This suggests a possible overlooked system configuration issue, though I’m uncertain of its nature; therefore, any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Furthermore, a related problem arose while playing games. I frequently experienced FPS drops of 10-30 seconds, causing my frame rate to plummet to 5 or lower, rendering the game unplayable until it recovered and returned to its typical 50-60 FPS. Fortnite was not the only title exhibiting this behavior; I encountered similar drops while playing CSGO as well. Again, any assistance would be welcomed.

Thank you in advance to anyone offering support!

*Minor update: Installing the latest graphics card driver improved my frame rates, resulting in a consistent 25-30 FPS, although the occasional drops persist.*

This appears to be indicative of thermal regulation occurring. The graphics card reduces its processing speed momentarily for brief intervals as temperatures rise, subsequently increasing it again when temperatures return to a stable level. This behavior explains the observed decreases in frame rates.

Furthermore, despite your operational temperatures appearing acceptable, your peak measurements reach the high eighties to low nineties – a common threshold for thermal limiting in many graphics cards.

The recorded GPU temperatures are as follows: Value: 61 degrees C, Min: 29 degrees C, Max: 90 degrees C.

I recommend investigating this potential overheating issue. Experiment with directing an airflow towards your laptop and monitor, observing whether the maximum temperature decreases or if it fails to stabilize. If necessary, consider acquiring a laptop cooling pad – these are readily available at reasonable cost and offer a similar design.

Modern portable computers incorporate adaptable graphics technology. There’s a chance your device isn't accurately rendering games or activating its dedicated graphics card for optimal performance. To address this, attempt to access the Nvidia control panel and configure each game to execute in high-performance mode automatically upon launch. Should you encounter persistent problems, please refer to this resource: https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic...t-option-/

Modern laptops feature adaptable graphics technology. It’s conceivable that your laptop isn't accurately rendering the game or activating its dedicated graphics card, leading to suboptimal performance.

To resolve this, attempt to access the Nvidia control panel and manually configure the game to utilize High Performance mode upon launch.

If you continue experiencing problems, consider consulting this resource:

Previously, the Nvidia card was set as the default. Following this, I inspected the control panel to verify the setting and then executed the game, yet the same issue persisted.

Have you checked your temperatures when playing games? What temperature does your graphics card reach?

I haven’t. I haven't played for extended periods because of the problems I’ve experienced. If it was overheating, how could I solve that on a laptop?

Before discussing potential solutions, we must determine if the problem is due to excessive heat. Please utilize HWMonitor to monitor temperatures while gaming and provide a report detailing the readings for both your CPU and GPU.

Regarding your gaming performance, have you been tracking your temperatures? What temperature does your graphics card reach during gameplay?

It’s important to determine if overheating is the problem before suggesting any solutions. Please use HWMonitor to examine your temperatures while gaming and provide a report with the data you collect, including readings for both your CPU and GPU. I’ve included a screenshot showing HWMonitor's output after 30 minutes of gaming, and I observed that I didn’t encounter the frame rate drops I initially described. Nevertheless, I am unable to utilize maximum graphics settings at a consistent 30 frames per second or higher.

Before suggesting any solutions, it’s crucial to determine if high temperatures are the problem. Employ HWMonitor to monitor your system's temperature while gaming and provide a detailed report of both the CPU and GPU readings. Unfortunately, the provided image link failed to load. The recorded CPU temperature was 60 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 31 degrees and a maximum of 80 degrees. Similarly, the GPU temperature was 61 degrees Celsius, ranging from 29 to 90 degrees.

The weather appears favorable.

Have you attempted to remove all display drivers by utilizing Display Driver Uninstaller and subsequently installing only the latest drivers?
