Performance problems with AMD 5800x graphics card
Hey there, I just switched from an AMD 3800x and have run into some problems lately. The biggest change is a drop in frame rate in COD: Warzone (usually steady at 90-125fps without any GPU overclocking). On the CPU side, my scores are way below what I expect for a 5800x—5000 Cinebench r20 versus 6000+. At first I thought cooling was the issue, but I’ve read these chips tend to get hot and even under heavy use they rarely go past 90°C. My H100i liquid stays under 45°C, which is normal after a long gaming session or stress test.
Here’s what my setup looks like: AMD 5800x | ASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Hero Wifi | 970 EVO Plus 1TB | Trident Z Royal 32GB DDR3600 | ASUS ROG STRIX 5700xt | Corsair H100i Pro | Corsair RM850x
I flashed the BIOS to version 3601 with AGESA V2 PI 1.2.0.3 Patch A, but nothing changed. I also reinstalled the AMD video drivers without success—I’m planning to check the chipset drivers next.
Some basic specs: memory clock matches infinity fabric at 1800MHz, RAM is running at XMP 3600MHz (16-19-19-39 at T1), PBO is enabled in BIOS with a +200MHz target. I use liquid metal on the waterblock and keep temps between 70°C and 90°C during heavy load.
I was thinking about upgrading to some Samsung B-DIMMs and doing overclocking, but I wasn’t expecting such a big drop—my Cinebench score is now around 5400, which is close to what I see in the memory-heavy Guru 3D test (link provided). My 3DMark scores are also decent (9286 vs 9852 for 8k CPU), so it’s not just the CPU.
The 5800x is actually reaching a steady 4.82GHz during Time Spy, which is a bit disappointing. A gap of about 1000 points feels significant. Any suggestions would be great!
Recent update confirmed – Windows 10 is running at idle speeds of 40–43 with underload rising. This pattern matches previous issues linked to Power Management settings. Applying Ryzen Master "Game Mode" with PBO should boost Cinebench R20 to 5600. I’ll keep reinstalling software to pinpoint the problem.
is the game using low settings or maximum performance? i don’t play cod, and i’m not interested in benchmarks on cnuzel or similar platforms since there are many variations that can boost results or ruin them. my 5800x paired with a 6800xt consistently exceeds 200 on battlefield 1 when fully loaded. cs uses 128 ticks per second with an average of 450+ fps and 64 500+ fps overall. titanfall 2 multiplayer caps at over 140% maxed settings. when playing at 1440p with freesync off, it works smoothly except on my second monitor at 1080p where freesync is needed. make sure to install the latest bios and verify docp status on the bios—if it’s disabled, that could explain the performance difference. my 5800x runs at around 4.7ghz with 1.28v power consumption, and temperatures stay between 65-70 on h100i platinum ps. the render should hit 100% without overclocking.
Also keep in mind that your board is decent but quite outdated—you're missing out on its full potential. If you have someone with a B550 or X570, try using the CPU there. I changed my X370's RAM when I was getting ready for the 5800X, and an ASUS Strix B550-F Gaming works well now.
