Hello everyone, I'm checking my gaming setup where my CPU (i7 9700k) reaches 80% usage while my GPU (2080) stays at 20%. I wonder if either component is not working properly and want to try enabling CPU Turbo Boost to possibly improve frame rates. The issue is that my CPU gets very hot (98-100°C+) when I push it. Here are my questions: 1. Could my CPU be limiting the GPU performance this way? 2. Will the performance improve if Turbo Boost is turned on? 3. How should I test for a fault in either CPU or GPU? I'm also thinking about upgrading my cooler and using Turbo Boost, what do you think?

It's not very probable. Could you share your frame rate, resolution, game settings, and whether v-sync is turned on? Also, what temperature is your GPU at? Turbo boosts frequency when cooling is sufficient, which may help a bit but won't be significant. It shouldn't fail, though—using benchmarks like Heaven for GPU and Prime95 for CPU could really improve performance.

1. We checked the MW2 campaign; it looks very similar on the Vanguard MP. Expect 110-120 FPS, 1920x1080 resolution, no V-Sync.
2. Nice, I think a boost to around 2.0 GHz would be impressive.
3. I’ll give it a shot!

1. It seems uncertain right now, but it could just be due to heat buildup and reduced performance. What’s your cooler doing?
2. The reason it’s turned off is because without it, the CPU slows down significantly. If it’s already hot without it, it strongly suggests thermal problems.
3. Run a synthetic test using Cinebench for the CPU and Unigine Superposition for the GPU to get a clear score.

When CPU usage spikes while GPU usage drops, cooling becomes a likely factor. Insufficient cooling may cause throttling, which raises CPU usage as clocks slow. Keep an eye on temperatures during gameplay. Another point often overlooked is adjusting graphical settings—lower fidelity can reduce GPU load (as seen in Escape from Tarkov). If you're on a low setting, try increasing it to medium and see if that boosts GPU activity.

I noticed the Corsair H100i might need replacing after eight years. After running Prime95 for ten seconds, temperatures jump to over 100°C right away, then drop to a maximum of 80°C when it's turned off. Will check it out tomorrow—thanks for the advice!

Absolutely not at all to pair with that
