I've observed MSI Afterburner causing my CPU (i7-4790k) to hit high temperatures during specific games, especially Modern Warfare 2019. Though average temps stay around the low 70s Celsius, peaks go into the high 90s, reaching up to 100 degrees. My Hyper 212 LED cooler is new and I haven't seen thermal throttling even at a steady 4.4 GHz. I've run this setup for over two years, so it might not be my fault just because I installed it recently. I'm not sure if the cooling system is perfectly aligned, but should I worry or take any action? Cooler link provided.

I'd just swap out the cooler and check the readings. How often did you replace the thermal paste?

The last time I replaced the thermal paste was in August 2018, which is about two years prior.

It would have been a spike, staying near the low 70s. I might test cinebench though—I've never used it before.

Test the bench performance and monitor temperatures. As mentioned earlier, it might be wise to refresh the thermal paste and reinstall the cooler.

He has a Non-K 4790 with a cooler that matches the one he owns. It hasn’t reached over 74°C during Cinebench R20, which is good compared to the 1751 benchmark score. On Apex Legends it typically stays under 55°C. I recall the 4790 can have hot spots—people would try to improve performance by adjusting settings. During my first thermal paste application, one core ran at 99°C with full throttle while others stayed around 60°C. After reapplying the paste, the issue was resolved since some areas weren’t adequately covered.

@Jenko32 k and non-k CPUs aren't the same even when they're in stock. The 4790 model has a reduced TDP and slower stock clocks compared to the 4790K. https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html The gap exceeds "1-2 degrees"

Thanks for the temperatures, but comparing to the i7-4790K is tricky since their clock speeds, turbo settings, and power limits differ.
