Performance metrics and memory allocation details
Hello everyone, I've noticed that in some games my vram usage is often under 2.5gb (out of 3 that the card has) yet my fps are below 50, dipping to under 40 during some scenes. What I'm wondering is if there is vram to spare, why aren't my fps higher? System https://pcpartpicker.com/b/rrnnTW Gameplay https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBeMtj6...6ssE93qk3w GPU overclocking done in MSI afterburner Power limit +20% Core Clock 1200mhz Memory clock 1575mhz
because vram doesn't control fps directly, you experience stuttering when the GPU can't handle what needs rendering due to insufficient vram. loading from slower storage adds delays before things are displayed. any further lag comes from poor optimization or a slow CPU/GPU.
I'm worried I swapped some numbers about the memory clock and usage. The game clock stays around 1575 MHz, but usage varies with the situation. In ACBF it stays below 2g, Crysis 3 is near 2.1g, and Tomb Raider sits at about 1.4g. Shadows of Mordor might push it up to 2.9g. It seems the GPU's memory speed isn't fast enough to fully utilize the 3GB RAM, which could cause lower FPS even though there appears to be extra VRAM available. The processor doesn't seem to be using more than what's being shown.
Reduce the settings. The issue isn’t about VRAM; it’s because you’re forcing the GPU to handle tasks it doesn’t need. A 280 isn’t the same as 290x.
