Performance issues with Witcher 3 on RTX 3090 graphics card
Hello, I created a console thread a few days back regarding Witcher 3. After watching my dad play the game, I decided to try it myself again. Feeling hopeful, I gathered a mod list from one of those nice YouTube videos and saved everything into my game folder. When I launched the game, it didn’t meet expectations—it appeared significantly degraded compared to the videos, and the frame rate dropped to just 5-10 frames per second. I uninstalled the downloaded version and tried running it in vanilla mode, but it still didn’t work well. The game runs around 45 frames per second with about 60% GPU usage (maximum in vanilla), but when I move quickly it crashes to roughly 15 fps while keeping a low GPU load of only 7%. Running it at 4K on my TV worked fine, though the GPU stayed at 95% capacity and the boost clock was 1840MHz, barely managing 60 fps. That performance is similar to what I got with my 1080Ti. I attempted to disable NV Surround and play in 4K on my TV, but the GPU remained heavily loaded. No hardware suggestions were needed—everything else seemed normal except for this issue. I’m curious if others face similar problems with Witcher 3 on a 3090. No changes to drivers or BIOS settings have helped, and I haven’t noticed any impact from flashing an older VBIOS. Here are my specs: Ryzen 3700X (soon upgraded to 5950X if available), ASRock B550 Pro-4 (Backup MoBo), 4x8Gig Patriot Viper @3200Mhz, CL16, ASUS TUF 3090OC.
My 3080 works well with modded Witcher 3 at high frame rates in 4K, especially with many graphics tweaks. In contrast, using a 5600X gives me smoother performance.
I can attempt to connect a Corsair TX850 to an EVGA 650GQ if you'd like.
My current sessions aren’t affected much, which suggests it might not be a CPU issue.
This low-power unit at just 650 watts for a 3090 seems inadequate. Connecting the TX850 might resolve the problem. I wouldn't be surprised if it works.
Normally the PC shuts down if the PSU is overloaded. Seems like OP has throttling issues. I don't know if the other PSU would help, but trying won't hurt. My CPU is also only sitting at 30% when playing the game. It's not about that. I've had a 3700X before and the game was also running perfectly fine with that.
I tested it with the 850W power supply, but there was no noticeable improvement (as expected). The main issue appears to be related to the triple monitor configuration. When I run FullHD, I see around 100 frames per second and about 99% GPU utilization—even the GPU doesn’t reach its peak as it does in other games. There’s also a noticeable drop in FPS and GPU usage when I move the camera during gameplay. I think I’ll wait until all my hardware is updated and try playing on another PC in 4K instead. I don’t expect major fixes for such problems with an older title.
