Performance issues with RTX3070, reduced frame rates and stuttering observed.
I'm facing issues with my recently bought Gigabyte gaming OC-RXT 3070. Before, I used a GTX 1650 and played games smoothly without stuttering or FPS drops; it was just the card that wasn't powerful enough. Now, with the RTX 3070, I can't play any games at all. When playing Fortnite on low or high settings, DirectX 11 or 12, with VSync on or off, I get around 160 FPS for a few seconds before dropping below 20 FPS and stuttering constantly, especially during panning. Enabling RTX causes the game to crash. Minecraft works without stuttering, but even with RTX enabled at low render distance, it crashes. I've tried several fixes: uninstalling and reinstalling the DDU driver, switching PCIe Gen 3 to Gen 4, performing a clean boot in msconfig and Task Manager, running a virus scan, checking clocked GPU frequency by 100mhz, confirming CPU isn't overclocked, updating BIOS, verifying thermal info, ensuring CPU stays under 60%, checking memory errors via Windows diagnostic, and confirming CPU core usage never hit 100%. CPU was a Ryzen 5 3600, GPU RTX 3070, cooler Master Hyper 212, etc. All systems seem normal—CPU under 60%, GPU under 70%. If you can help, it would be really appreciated!
The issue with stuttering often points to something that should function properly but isn’t quite right—like a machine running sluggishly. It’s subtle and can be tricky to diagnose. The problem stems from various potential causes, making it one of the most challenging aspects to resolve during troubleshooting. You’re already experimenting, which is great. There are still many angles left to consider, such as temperature, background applications, or storage problems. Other factors might also play a role, though I’m not aware of them. Regarding what you’ve tried so far: the built-in Microsoft memory checker has a poor track record, especially with false negatives. In the coming days, a free tool called memtest86 could offer a more reliable alternative, even if it takes longer. “Viruses” are a distinct category of malware, though they aren’t the most threatening. A malware scanner you ran likely covers a broader range of threats.
I don't think heat is the main factor. I checked my temperatures using cpuid hwmonitor during use, and nothing showed excessive heating or throttling. A clean boot with all apps turned off didn't help either. It might be a driver problem, but I've removed all previous drivers and installed the newest one, yet it's still not working.
When temperatures hover near average levels, issues can still arise. I saw a video from someone who had their computer repaired by sending parts to a service center. Their overheating caused a stutter, and their temperature sensors showed 43°C. The fix was relocating a wifi card from its slot. The phrase "clean boot" isn’t something I’m used to. Are you asking about restarting in safe mode or performing a clean installation?
I previously employed it for another problem and encountered no issues; only recently did I try the Microsoft Memory Checker.
