Performance issues when downloading at slower rates on the Asus RT-AX86U.
I've just relocated and joined a new ISP (Verizon FIOS) offering 940/880 Mbps down/up. I set up an Asus RT-AX86U router to manage the high-speed connection. My speed tests consistently show 900+ Mbps down and 200-300 Mbps up. Connecting my PC directly to the ONT from my ISP delivers the expected performance. This suggests the issue lies with the router itself. The PC is hardwired and all QoS, Network Protection, and Parental Controls settings are disabled during testing. I've also attempted: factory resetting the router, toggling jumbo frames, and enabling/disabling the firewall. Anyone with experience would be welcome to share their insights!
Smallnetbuiulder.com conducted some tests on various routers to demonstrate their NAT performance. One challenge with Gigabit Internet is that many routers struggle to manage the traffic. This is why some users opt to create their own routers using PFsense, since the x86 hardware in most routers is significantly more capable than the chips they use. I think my Synology RT2600AC is designed for Gigabit or at least close enough.
Hi, I shared this on SmallNetBuilder too (https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ax8...oad.69015/). I’m using a 500/500 Fibre connection without a modem. When I run the AX86U directly, it downloads perfectly but uploads slows significantly—around 80-130 Mbps on fast.com and about 200-300 Mbps on my ISP’s speedtest site. My connection is via FibreStream.ca. With a wired laptop or desktop, speeds peak on both tests after changing firmware, resetting the device, or using different cables. Adding an edge router or my Apple Time Capsule improves performance to near expectations. Changing the WAN port didn’t help much. I contacted Asus, but they just say my router is faulty. I’m returning it to Amazon for a replacement. I hope adding another device helps, as I’m currently using my Apple Time Capsule with 802.11AC and everything is working fine. I’m unsure if the issue is with the hardware or if few users have high upload speeds buying this model. I’m hoping the problem is a firmware-related one.
Feb 1 I got my new router from Amazon. It’s still having the same problem. Looks like they might need to fix firmware issues with fiber connections.
Thank you for sharing the details. I also contacted ASUS and received a representative who promptly proceeded with the return process without any additional checks. It seems there may be a recurring problem with these routers. I’ll need to return the device and look for another solution.
You're finding it frustrating when they keep redirecting you to the same issue. It sounds like you're trying to have your concerns taken seriously but are being repeatedly asked to repeat the same steps. You're also working to get this matter escalated, but you're nearing a decision to return the item.
