Today I finally started experimenting with boosting my memory speed (G.Skill Aegis 16GB DDR4-CL16 3000). From the specs, it should clock at 3000MHz, but it never reached that. Since I installed this system two and a half years ago, it consistently ran at 2133MHz. I attempted to apply XMP profiles from my motherboard (MSI X370 Gaming Pro Carbon), which led to BSODs and 30-minute boot loops where the debug LED on the mainboard indicated a GPU error. Recently, I manually overclocked the board for the first time, setting it to 3000MHz and 1.3V. Both Windows Task Manager and CPU-Z reported it running at 1500MHz, which aligns with the double data rate concept for DDR. I consulted a few friends, and they confirmed their task managers displayed the actual memory clock speed. After running some benchmarks, I observed a decline in performance—Cinebench R20 fell from around 3300 to 2626, while Cinebench R15 dropped from 1320 to 1211. After resetting the memory clock and voltage back to the default "Auto" setting, performance improved slightly compared to the 3000MHz configuration, though it remained below previous levels. Now, Cinebench R20 multi-core score is 2836 and R15 is 1256. Someone might know what’s going on with my memory. Right now, I’m considering selling this build and purchasing a used one instead.
manager displays a rated speed of 3000, while CPU-Z shows 1500. Regarding non-CineBench metrics, performance isn't mainly influenced by memory speed.
Which CPU is installed on your motherboard? Previous Ryzen models are quite responsive to RAM speed settings until the Ryzen 3000 line is introduced.
There’s clearly an issue, my MSI board has two distinct XMP profiles. One causes the system to crash shortly after startup, while the other runs smoothly—just a single click change. You should verify this. Here’s what it appears in Task Manager.
Here you can observe the display in my task manager. You notice it lists 1067MHz when I adjust it to 2133MHz.
It's a common issue with AMD Ryzen 1700 models. Adjusting the memory clock speed and voltage can sometimes cause performance drops because it affects how the CPU communicates with RAM. If the settings aren't optimized for your specific workload, it may lead to instability or reduced efficiency.
Have you attempted to reset the CMOS? This could relate to turbo boosting settings in BIOS where voltage levels are adjusted automatically with [Auto] and vary based on load via testing. You should reset the CMOS, apply an XMP profile aligned with the speeds of the memory modules you purchased, save your changes, and retest. This is completely normal because having two memory sticks means it operates in DDR mode, resulting in a performance of approximately 2134.
