Performance issues and stuttering observed with the i5 8400.
Hi all! This is my first ever post here, and I am pretty desperate now. I have a i5 8400 and a GTX 1060 6GB with 16GB DDR4 RAM, and even in not modern games i get terrible stuttering and super high cpu usage. I changed drives, ssd, reinstalled windows, updated bios, every driver there was to update.. I just don't really know what is causing this. The temperatures are not the problem i think, since i have a pretty ok aftermarket Be Quiet Cooler, and have checked on those too a lot. Also, i guess its not really normal for the cpu to be bearly be able to reach 3,49Ghz on a single core. When i got it, back in the summer of 2018, it would turbo normally, just like every other i5 8400. Me and my friend bought basically identical systems then, and only i seem to be having this issue. If anyone here has any idea why this could be caused i would gladly appriciate it! I don't even really play that much on my pc anymore cause of the constant annoying stuttering that can occur, and freeze ups during games when i have 89-97% cpu usage. I am pretty much out of ideas when it comes to this. I will list my complete specs list down below, but I'd just like to mention that sometimes there is no stuttering at all, sometimes there are stutters every 2 seconds for like 10 minutes, then freeze ups in games every 5-10 minutes for an hour, then after these things go about, in random order, I can basically play games just fine, but the occassional freeze up is there when it hits 100% cpu usage. I suppose that would be the biggest problem and takeaway from this post. The CPU appears to manage additional processes during gaming. Checked task manager to confirm the game is the sole consumer of CPU resources.
Your CPU is limiting performance, likely due to heat. It should operate closer to 3.8GHz with proper cooling. Verify core and VRM temperatures, check drive usage, and scan for malware to rule out other issues.
I assembled it myself in 2018. I chose the components on my own and didn’t get any assistance—it was my very first PC build. I felt really accomplished... except for the lag in games.
Noticing a potential issue during the setup process, especially after investing time in research and watching videos about purchasing PC components. I maintain regular cleaning routines and replace thermal paste roughly every 4 to 6 months, though I’m unsure if this frequency is optimal.
I built my initial PC between 2014 and 2015 and skipped changing the thermal paste for about 5 to 6 years. Haha!
LMAO Sure, I'm sure the thermal pasta area is the issue here. I tried my friend's identical PSU, but it still had stuttering. When his setup ran on a different PSU, it worked fine. The malware suspicion lingered for a while, but once I swapped in a brand new HDD and SSD, the problem persisted even after reinstalling Windows.
