Hello, I've observed that recently when using an app that utilizes the GPU, its usage spikes and drops unexpectedly. This impacts performance, like a game maintaining steady 50% GPU usage but then suddenly dropping to just 10%, causing noticeable FPS drops. It's happened while watching a movie on the MPC-BE video player as well. I'm unsure what might be causing this issue, but any insights would be greatly appreciated. My GPU model is Quadro 3000M and I'm running Windows 10.

Which application is this? Several options are available. Are there alternatives that don’t offer this feature? Is there also a reduction in CPU usage? Could background programs be consuming CPU resources? If the CPU reaches its limit and allocated performance drops, the GPU can only handle what it receives. Updated August 13, 2022 by Bombastinator

Apps function like programs now. This has occurred with video players and games. CPU activity doesn't appear to be impacted, nor does it reach maximum levels or become excessively high. It also happened even when the GPU was operating at full capacity, with temperatures remaining moderate.

You’d likely benefit from spec details. The options are AMD or Intel, and you want to know their age.

Yeah, got that. I was asking if it was only one which one? Some people only run one app on their computer. Seems it’s not though. Video playing is potato, video editing isn’t. So not just high end video intensive apps (or yes just high end video intemsive apps?) but also not everything. There is also implication that this get worse over time with happening in more and more kinds of apps

It's the I7-2860qm processor, and the laptop model is the Dell Precision M6600.

Video playback isn't an issue because I use a tool called SVP (Smooth video project). It leverages GPU power to run videos at 60fps, even though it's set to mostly use CPU. I also run browsers, video players, and games on my machine. The problem occurs specifically when playing games (Heroes of the Storem) and watching movies with the same program that supports 60fps playback.

It appears the issue could stem from the Nvidia control panel setting being switched to "controlled by NVIDIA controller" rather than "prefer maximum performance."

It seems like you were expecting optimal performance, but it kept happening. Then you switched to FRAPS to check the FPS, and it stopped occurring. This is confusing—I don’t understand what’s causing it.
