Performance expectations for 8700k in the future remain unchanged.
Hello! This might be my first post in a while. I’m seeking some thoughts on whether upgrading to an 8700k is worthwhile for gaming purposes. I have roughly $2500 saved whenever new parts are available. My current setup is 3440x1440 at 100Hz, playing various games. I’m curious if it’s beneficial to upgrade the CPU just for gaming or if I could save the money and upgrade to a higher clock speed later. I also feel pressure to keep up with DDR5 developments. Personally, I used to act without hesitation but now worry about wasting money as a parent. Appreciate the feedback!
It's a solid chip for gaming unless it restricts your performance. Upgrading isn't worth it unless you hit a bottleneck; otherwise, plan for a new CPU if it fails.
I'm facing the same situation with an 8086k, practically identical to the 8700k. In short, if it meets your requirements, don't stress about upgrading. It may not be the absolute top today, but it still delivers a solid gaming experience. The DDR5 era could arrive about a year later, and I don't foresee it losing its competitive edge in gaming during that period.
It affects performance, though not as significantly as it would for high refresh rate.
It involves both the CPU and GPU working together. When resolutions or settings increase, the GPU often becomes the limiting factor. For maximum frame rates at lower settings, the CPU takes more prominence. This can lead to misunderstandings about bottlenecks, but it doesn't affect overall satisfaction if performance is adequate. An 8700k provides satisfactory results. It's not the highest tier, but it won't cause major complaints. The difference between 120 fps and 140 fps with a stronger CPU is usually negligible unless you're chasing marginal gains. If you really want more, consider upgrading the CPU, but otherwise enjoy gaming without excessive concern.
