I have limited experience with computers and often need to spend time researching or watching videos to accomplish tasks. Still, I recently upgraded my PC after using an older one for five years. On my first boot, I installed Minecraft for a quick test. Everything worked smoothly at maximum settings, delivering around 250fps at 1440p and roughly 250 frames per second. I set the render distance to its highest level, which I believe is crucial later on. Overclocking wasn’t my strong point, but I watched tutorials and adjusted my CPU (Intel i7 9700K) to 5Ghz and RAM to 3600MHz. While running Cinebench for benchmarking, I noticed improved scores after overclocking, with temperatures around 70°C. I didn’t manually tweak voltage settings since there were no errors, so I assumed everything was fine. The next day, when I replayed Minecraft, my FPS fluctuated between 30 and 80. Looking straight or adjusting render distance gave me about 400fps. This led me to suspect the CPU was the issue. I reset all overclocking parameters to defaults and tried again, but the same low FPS persisted. I’m puzzled by how I managed 250fps initially and can’t reach 100fps even with the same settings now. If anyone has advice, I’d really appreciate it. Here’s what my setup looks like: CPU – Intel i7 9700K, Graphics – GTX 1080 Ti, RAM – 16GB (two 8GB modules) at 3600MHz, Monitor – Aorus Ad27QD 1440p 144Hz, Boot drive – Samsung 1TB M.2, Storage – Seagate Barracuda 2TB 7200RPM, Power supply – Corsair RMX 750x.

Have you heard that a 144Hz screen is limited to 144 FPS? That means 400 FPS would just cause blurring.

I would remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard for a short time and make sure all system settings are reinitialized. Switch Windows to the performance power plan and adjust GPU settings if using NVIDIA, checking if this resolves the issue.

I understand that issue. Having VSync off in Minecraft didn’t really show noticeable screen tearing. It might have been because I was impressed by the monitor size and frame rate improvements compared to my old PC. When VSync was enabled at 144Hz, it worked fine, but I was curious why I couldn’t hit the same FPS I used to get. That’s not a big concern for me since I don’t need it. However, I’m concerned about whether I’ll be able to reach peak performance in other games, especially with my unreliable Wi-Fi connection.

I tried your advice, but nothing changed. It seems I made a small mistake while talking to my friend who built most of it. He was there when we loaded Minecraft for the first time. We figured it was because the 250 fps happened during our first load, render distance was set to default (10 chunks), and I had F3 open. I probably closed F3 to check the new monitor and then increased render distance to 32 chunks without pressing F3. At that point, render distance was around 32 chunks and I thought I was still at about 250 fps. In short, I wasted your time—I’m just a special snowflake.
