Performance drop in NVME SSDs across two distinct setups (Windows 11)
Hey everyone, I’ve noticed similar problems with two PCs using the same SSD setup. Both have the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus-G (4TB and 2TB versions) and run Windows 11 Pro. The main issue is that high read or write speeds drop to just a few seconds before disappearing entirely. Neither drive is full, but the 4TB is hovering around 60% capacity recently. Temperatures are normal, and diagnostics show everything appears healthy except for slight warmth. Performance tests on another SSD in a different slot showed similar early issues. They’re about 100km apart. It looks like a possible coincidence or hardware quirk rather than a direct failure—maybe something else is at play. Any thoughts?
I checked how it behaved at lower temperatures. Since it’s a boot drive, I’m confident it stays mostly idle during that test. Did you manually clean the drive beforehand to ensure TRIM was applied? If you removed files and then downloaded many games, there might be no free space even if 40% isn’t actively used, especially if TRIM wasn’t run recently.
What you're observing is unusual for drive performance. It seems the speed remains inconsistent regardless of temperature changes. For instance, during heavy operations like writing large video files, it stays near 60-65°C yet underperforms significantly. There are short spikes of 1-2 seconds at speeds up to 200MB/s, followed by a drop to 5-20MB/s for most of the remaining time until completion. After moving many videos off the drive—even though that should have been a read task—I ran Windows' "optimize" manually before testing.
I've also attempted to interchange NVME ports on the motherboard, but the results didn't show any significant change.
