Hey everyone, thanks for reaching out. I’m new to this enthusiast side and feeling a bit confused. I currently own an MSI MPG X570 gaming PC and am considering upgrades while helping a friend set up a build. The existing motherboard might already be sufficient for him. Skipping the cost stuff, would switching to something like the Asus Rog VIII Hero really boost performance? I’m not very familiar with VRM specs or their impact on gaming. Do you think there’s a noticeable difference between these two boards? I know VRM is better in general, but I don’t fully grasp how it affects overall performance. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Also, just confirming if this is the right place for my questions.

For serious overclocking, the ROG VIII Hero can really help, but only if your comparison board has decent VRM setup. You might also want to look at the motherboard tier list to choose a better one.

The motherboard plays a minimal role in overall performance. Most factors like the CPU, GPU, and RAM have a greater influence. It only matters when your system lacks support for specific features that could boost those components. For instance, a board with PCIe 4.0 will help if you use compatible parts, but it doesn’t enhance performance by itself. To benefit from PCIe 4.0, you also require a suitable CPU, storage, and an application that takes advantage of it. Stronger VRMs can aid overclocking, yet the board alone won’t deliver better results. You must leverage those improved VRMs effectively.

When overclocking, you might need to boost the voltage to maintain stable clocks. Affordable VRMs could struggle to deliver consistent voltage or handle heat, leading to crashes even if the CPU functions normally. Overclocking carries risks, but aiming higher usually means using better parts.
