Performance concerns at high speed 5800x 3600MT/s
I recently acquired a Ryzen 5800x paired with an old Gigabyte B450 motherboard and a DDR4 kit. Setting up a stable system has been challenging. As a beginner in Ryzen, especially with the 5000 series, I'm learning about memory sensitivity. I wanted to reuse some of my existing hardware to save costs instead of buying new parts. This PC is mainly for gaming and occasional development.
Hardware: CPU – Ryzen 7 5800x
Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 I AORUS PRO WIFI
Memory: Patriot Viper Steel DDR4 64GB (2x32GB) at 3600MHz
Testing results:
- Cinebench R23 score ~15200
- 1-hour OCCT memory test passed
- MemTest64 failed after 7 hours of XMP mode
- DRAM voltage: 1.35V, CR: 1T, SOC: 1.05V (board default was 1.22V)
- VDDG/VDDP: Auto regulation
I’ve adjusted the SOC to 1.03–1.10 and kept voltages between 1.35–1.40. Passed memory tests at base speeds; four passes in MemTest. The modules came from another system, so they appear functional.
The VRMs on this board seem poor and could limit performance. It seems more stable with lower SOC—often I see errors only after hours of testing.
I’m considering CR2T as a potential solution for stability with dual-rank memory. I’m not very familiar with memory specs or timing details.
This process used the RAM with EXPO/XMP enabled or ran the RAM at a higher frequency than the standard (2133 or 2400 MHz). If yes: disable EXPO/XMP and verify the BIOS shows the speed back to default. Then run MemTest64 again. If it continues to fail, your RAM is likely defective.
Don't alter the voltages just yet, keep them as default. Start with 3200Mhz and check stability, then adjust timing. If it works, leave the RAM unchanged. If your RAM can handle the 3200Mhz clock speeds of a standard CL16 board, proceed confidently.
You'll need additional testing to confirm the issues. The topology, layout, and tracerouting of older 300-series and 400-series boards could be restrictive (they lack the robustness of X570/B550 models). As noted, start with a lower frequency DRAM configuration—it helps identify the problem. Also verify that the memory sticks or modules are functioning correctly.
Memtest completed successfully without xmp and at 2133mhz. The RAM functioned properly on a different machine.
We completed everything using the newest BIOS version; I haven’t checked the chipset yet. Unfortunately, there’s just one profile available.
