Performance below expectations for Core i5-12400 and 7900 GRE
I recently upgraded to a 7900GRE and experimented with CP2077. My performance hasn’t met expectations at FHD Ultra preset, averaging around 70 fps. The CPU is at full load while the GPU usage stays between 50-60%. I’ve disabled XMP and reinstalled drivers via DDU without success. Benchmark videos on YT show similar results—100-110 FPS for Ultra with 7800xt, and 169 FPS for Medium with 3080. My system specs are: CPU i5-12400, 32GB DDR4, MSI Pro B660M-A, GPU RX 7900GRE, PSU Corsair RM850x.
It seems there might be a problem with the CPU when it's operating at full capacity.
Basically, your GPU is waiting around for the CPU to "catch up", given these stats.
What did you upgrade from?
At 1080p, I wouldn't expect to see the 7900GRE fully taxed when paired with that CPU - but would've assumed a *bit* better performance.
Have you checked what is using up your CPU resources? Anything CPU-intensive running at the same time? I'd try having nothing else running (game + monitoring software, otherwise idle in Windows), and see if performance improves any.
If not, then you're looking at either a CPU upgrade or (more advisable) a resolution bump - you'd have a better pairing with those specs + a 1440p display anyway.
Well you certainly want XMP on. What is the CPU clock speed when it is at 100% usage running CyberPunk?
Doubtful that is a single 32GB stick, but are you properly running dual channel mode? That can make a huge CPU performance difference.
Certainly room for CPU improvement, but I agree seems like something is amiss.
A few considerations. The 12400 is a strong CPU but may limit the 7900GRE, particularly at 1080p. Your RAM is important—ensure XMP is enabled and it operates at its rated speed, assuming you have two 16GB modules.
You might want to run the 12400 in Cinebench R23 with both multi-core and single-core tests, comparing your results to the review scores to confirm optimal performance.
Adjust the Windows power plan to Ultimate Performance during gaming sessions and re-test. Also, verify that your BIOS is up to date. Overall, the CPU might curb performance at 1080P, but it sets a solid foundation for future upgrades like the 13th or 14th generation chips, which would significantly boost the 7900GRE’s capabilities.
I upgraded from a 1060, which is a pretty big jump.
I don't think the GPU will be heavily used either, but this low performance is odd when compared to benchmark videos.
Nothing is consuming my CPU resources, I ran it with nothing open and didn't notice any real improvement.
This situation doesn't quite align with expectations since PL1 operates at 65W. Check if RAM is utilizing dual channel via CPU-z, confirming "Dual" status indicates proper operation. I'm also interested in understanding the CPU load patterns during full utilization.

Another recording runs at 12400F with 7800xt at 1440p ultra, achieving about 64FPS, and the performance is around 80%.
