You can apply the serial key from Windows 7 to a Windows 10 upgrade, but make sure it matches the correct version. For a clean installation, verify compatibility and follow the official setup instructions.

The issue with serial keys often arises, especially with OEM versions of Windows. The most reliable keys are those from a complete purchased installation. While a clean install isn’t necessary, the Windows 10 installer offers this feature—especially if your system is identical. You can also use Windows or their activation service, though I’ve had to perform a clean install for Windows 7, activate it via that method, and then upgrade to Windows 10 on one PC beforehand. It should save you from having to enter any keys at all.
