I purchased Win8 previously when they offered a discount for users running Windows 7. It seems the price was around £25 for the digital upgrade. Regarding a clean installation via the downloader, there appears to be an option to skip saving data, though it’s unclear if this constitutes a true clean install or merely creates a backup in a Windows.old folder, similar to what happened when upgrading from XP to 7.

Perform a fresh setup that begins with a complete reinstall in Windows, including registry and associated accounts. All components will transfer to Windows.OLD, where it will be prepared for removal.

Ignore the old files. There are still three gigs left that I can't remove.

You're unsure about removing something. Click the right-click icon on the C:\ folder, choose Properties. Next, select the Disk Cleanup option, then pick the Cleanup System files button. Make sure all checkboxes are selected, and press OK.
