Microsoft checks your system for a valid license before allowing a clean installation. If you're upgrading from an older version like 8.1, it will verify compatibility and licensing status automatically.

It will start automatically after a clean installation—no need for concern. https://www.howtogeek.com/224342/how-to-...indows-10/ To erase everything, tap delete on the entire screen once you reach that point: You'll see "unallocated space" remaining, which can't be deleted. Proceed to the next step and Windows will install. Make sure to disconnect all drives except the OS drive during installation.

The tiny section is meant to swap out the windows, not for any other purpose.

It can't be Windows, it's too small. What exactly is inside that partition?

Does the system reserve partition contain essential data needed for Windows to begin, such as the boot manager, boot configuration database, HDD mappings, BitLocker startup files, recovery tools, and various system files?

It was great not to give in and erase it. I realized early on, to avoid silly errors, I should always check first.

Activation depends on the hardware setup originally sent to Microsoft during your Windows 10 upgrade. If you've been receiving updates and using a Microsoft account, the activation will now connect to that account. The new installation will either activate automatically during setup (skip the license key prompt) or after logging into your Microsoft account.

Oh, the thing I initially dismissed as a complete waste of time turned out to be incredibly valuable. It’s amazing how much it’s come in handy since then. Not really a loss at all.

This wouldn't have affected the outcome. Removing it earlier wouldn't have stopped the Windows setup process.

The essential remains linked to the physical device. Once the laptop is online, it links to Microsoft's servers... which detect the key as belonging to a different machine and will deny activation. You must have the key from the laptop prior to the format.
