I just performed a fresh setup of Windows 10 with a new SSD, and the operating system was installed on a different drive. After the installation, I noticed that dragging the mouse across the highlighted area always showed red instead of blue, which puzzled me since I’d changed the color in the registry to match my wallpaper a few years ago. I recently reinstalled Windows after cleaning it up and deleting all recovery and other partitions. Also, after updating my graphics card and adjusting the GPU settings, I found an XML file containing my previous configuration before the reinstall. Despite these changes, everything else remained intact—taskbar settings, control panel, and even indexing continued as before. My main question is why the highlight color stayed red after the reinstall and what the XML file actually contained. I’m certain I completely wiped every drive.

When you connected your Microsoft account to Windows 10 on the previous storage device, it likely stored your settings and used them when linking to the new drive.

Theme settings are linked to your account (unless told otherwise: Settings > Accounts > Sync your settings). This works across all devices you use with your Microsoft account. Your laptop will align with your desktop, enabling seamless interaction with services like OneDrive, your phone for SMS/notifications/replies, Clipboard Sync, Timeline, and more, making your secondary devices feel connected.
