I've been trying to increase the clock speed of my Intel Pentium G3258 on the H81M-P33 board, but any adjustments in the BIOS cause my computer to crash when starting up. This happens even with small changes, like raising the speed from 3.2 GHz to 3.3 GHz.

Helpful tips:
- The MSI Intel Extreme Tuning tool worked as a temporary fix, but unlocking the CPU overclocker still results in a failure message after a restart.
- The crash isn't a blue screen; during boot it says "starting windows," then the system restarts a few times before reporting an OC failure and returning to normal settings.
- After installing MSI Live Update 6, everything was updated to the latest version.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.

To be honest, I just upgraded my CPU since I didn’t want to handle the problems. I really appreciate all the help that was given. Hahaha, I did the same—chose to go with a new 2011-3 motherboard and a 5820k. The G3258 was a great budget processor that could be overclocked well, but removing the overclocking or making it more complicated takes away its worth.

The H81 chipset doesn't support overclocking. The Z87 is the only option.

On Windows 10 there isn't the ability to overclock. It seems there was a significant problem with that, but it might still be possible on Windows 7 and 8.

The H81 chipset doesn't support overclocking. Only the Z87 is capable. The H81M-P33 can be overclocked, you can check for details yourself if needed.

If you're using Windows 10, it won't overclock. There seems to have been a significant problem with that and Windows 10. However, it might still be possible to overclock on Windows 7 and 8. I'm currently running Windows 7.

The problem seems resolved, which is why I removed the CPU. Back then, it was understood that some motherboard makers added BIOS updates on non-H97 boards to restore the ability to run the CPU in Windows 10. Did you use a BIOS version that includes this feature? Have you tried another BIOS version?

Nevermind, it seems the problem has been fixed, which is why I removed the CPU. Back then, I thought motherboard makers released BIOS updates for non-H97 boards to fix the oc issue so the CPU would run on Windows 10. Maybe you're using a BIOS that includes this fix? Have you considered switching to another BIOS version?

I'm facing the same problem with the same motherboard and CPU combination. However, I'm using Windows Server 2008 R2. Looking into similar situations, it seems that a fresh OS installation helped some users. I'm not sure if trying this would work for you.

I wanted to check in about my earlier comment. I ran an OS reinstall yesterday and now I can perform an OC on my G3258 using the MSI H81-P33. This suggests there might be an OS-related problem in certain situations.
