You must send a signal to the screen to achieve this. Without it, there might not be any output. Thunderbolt works well on desktops but has limitations there.

They reinstated those parts on the z97 chipset. It seems they didn't collaborate with other boards afterward.

The device works only if it has a TB3 header attached. Gigabyte produces cards with this feature as well.

Your motherboard must include a Thunderbolt connector. It's similar to needing a USB port on the side of the case for connecting USB devices.
