I understand this might seem a bit unusual at first, but please give it a try. When preparing for my next build, I plan to add a watercooled 3080 and display it upright. To achieve that, I need to use a Riser-Cable. My issue is that inserting the cable into the first PCIE slot partially blocks the remaining slots, even though my case allows it. Using a long cable and winding it around other components makes everything look messy. Plugging it into a lower slot doesn’t seem practical since most boards have only 4 lanes in the bottom PCIE slot. My idea is to double the first slot on the back of the motherboard, allowing me to route the cable behind the board vertically along the GPU mount. This way, I won’t block other slots and keep cables neatly hidden. If you’re not into vertical GPUs, you can stick with the standard front-side PCIE slot. I’m curious—why haven’t more high-end boards included this feature? What are your thoughts on this approach?
It could be possible. I’m not sure, but there might be a angled PCIe slot like with the 24-pin ones. I also considered building it myself, though I doubt I’d be able to solder it properly enough to reuse the slot.
This concept seems impractical without specialized tools. It would only make sense for a niche segment, and profitability would likely be low. Measuring PCIE slot widths might help, but I still believe it’s too large to be useful.
Soo, in case someone else comes across this topic: Even when you can resolder your PCIE-Slot from the backside, you have another problem. The pinlayout on PCIE a PCIE-Slot is not symmetrical, so when you 'just' flip the connector to the other side, those Pins will be mirrored.
