You can utilize the chipset lanes on your B350 board effectively. With your main GPU in the top slot and an M.2 drive in the only available slot, adding a 4x PCIe slot for another NVMe drive won’t significantly impact performance. It should work smoothly without major issues.

You're asking about your motherboard model and the R5 240's slot location. It looks like you're confirming that your system has all standard slots available on a typical B350 board.

It doesn't matter if you have fewer lanes or not. Even brand new top-end GPUs only slightly lose performance with fewer PCIe connections, and that model was quite basic nearly nine years ago. It should work perfectly regardless of the number of PCIe lanes available.

B350 boards are restricted to PCIe Gen 2 via the chipset, making an NVMe solution impractical. Choosing a Gen 3 drive would sacrifice significant speed, and reducing lanes to two could push performance toward SATA levels. Your motherboard guide should clarify lane assignments based on expansion cards.

I understand. It still consumes bandwidth.

the b350-f gaming m.2 includes an ssd, the top slot is a 2.5 slot, the 3080 mid 16x would need a 4x ssd adapter, it might slightly restrict airflow but should work, the lower one uses a usb 3.0 card, and the bottom 16x is an r5 240.

Great, I understand how the board functions in both directions. It should perform well if the USB card is placed above the central x16 slot. Otherwise, positioning it in the other two x1 slots might lower the bottom x4 (x16) to x2, which could affect you depending on your needs. Right now I have a GPU in x16, a USB card in x1, an M.2 adapter in x4 of x16, a 10G NIC in four x16 slots, and the M.2 itself on my system. This setup is essentially the theoretical limit for this board.

Will the central channel operate smoothly at least four times? Or will I need to switch lanes? I don’t mind how the lower lane looks; I’m just using the r5 240 since it’s more affordable than a good HDMI to analog converter for my CRT. My middle 1x lane is not working, but the GPU covers it.

Operates on x4 but excludes x8; does not handle branching. Allocating this slot will shift the primary slot to x8, which usually doesn't affect performance.
