PCIE issues at z590i
Hi everyone, hope you having a good day. My system are: Gigabyte Z590i Vision D rev 1.0 ITX i5-11400 Gigabyte RTX 3070 Vision G OC 8GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus 500gb M2 nvme Kingston Fury Special Edition DDR4 2x8 GB 3600mhz The story: 1. This mobo supports 10 and 11th gen intel CPUs and got 2 M2 slots (1 at the front PCIe 4.0 x4/x2 and 1 on the back SATA and PCIe 3.0 x4/x2, as referred in the manual). The first front M2 slot only works with 11th gen CPUs. 2. Previously I had my m2 ssd installed in the back slot and I was running RTX 2070 + i5 10400 without any issues. Then: 3. I sold my GPU and was running a built-in CPU one. 4. I changed my CPU from 10400 to 11400 5. I switched my M2 ssd from the back slot to the front one. Then, I bought myself the RTX 3070 mentioned above and the problem started: I got no picture from any GPU. I tried 2070, 630, 3070 and a couple of other GPUs and still got no picture (built-in graphics work nice from Thunderbolt as expected). I tried swithing PCIE modes to x3, x4, I tried disabling built-in GPU in UEFI and a couple of other things and finally found the solution: If I turn on PCIE bifurcation to x8/x8 both GPU and m2 ssd in the first slot work nice. But stop, I wanted my x16 for the GPU! ...so I did put my m2 ssd back to the back m2 slot, but it didnt help me. Starting from this point I cant get any picture from my GPUs if I dont use x8/x8 even when my ssd is back to the SATA M2 slot. Theres no ssd rn in the front M2 slot that uses PCIE but I still can't get the picture from any GPU if I dont turn on x8/x8 PCIE bifurcation. I tried flashing a new BIOS to the motherboard, clearing it and CMOS, reinstalling GPU - no reason, I dont have a picture from any GPU even if there isnt any m2 ssd in the front PCIE slot. I need to turn x8/x8 on to have it. Questions are (I came to this new hardware from the good olde 775 socket so im really stuck on all this PCIE things): 1. Is it ok for my RTX 3070 to work when x8/x8 enabled? Does it affect the speed or latency vs x16 mode? 2. It's the first try to put a GPU in after the upgrade to i5-11400, does this problem refer to smth about 11th gen or my mobo? 3. Why I cant just run x16 again even if theres no m2 ssd in PCIE slot? I think my 11th gen should have no problems in running x16 on that board if theres no PCIE M2 in here and 10400 was running it. It feels like when I booted the first time w/out the GPU but with M2 in PCIE Slot ansd 11th gen installed - I broke smth deep in the mobo and it can't run the X16 anymore. So now I'm completely stuck running my RTX 3070 with x8/x8 turned on and my M2 ssd in the back slot. The things I didn't try atm: 1. Re-sitting the CPU. My cooler is REALLY hard to dismount so it will be the last thing I try. 2. Flashing the BIOS when my M2 ssd is in the back slot. Can it help? 3. Sitting back i5-10400 no reason to do it because yes, it works nice, but it just dont have the frond M2 slot enabled because its the 10th gen, so there will be no problem at all I really need an explanation about that. Can my CPU be broken so it can't run x16 on this mobo? Do I need to turn smth on or off or maybe flash mobo bios with m2 ssd in the back slot (when I tried to flash it it was in the front one)? I didn't do it for now because this mobo can't save the BIOS settings profile to HDD/USB (It just say that it did, but theres no file), so I will need to do all my settings again, so I came here for some help/explanation first. Will be really appreciated. P.S. I also had a very strange cause: When I was trying to check if any GPUs work I put in my GT 630 as one and when I turned my PSU power switch on the light on the whole house started dimming, all speakers that work directly from 220V did a huge noise and finally the light go off. Second try finished in it too. It only happened with GT 630 and when I did remove it the PC started to work normally. How that can actually happen that switching it's PSU on crashed the whole house electricity and was definitely referred to that GPU but the PC itself kinda took no damage from it and just still work, if this "thing" that caused the problem came all the way from GPU to mobo & psu and was really hard and scary? When I took this GPU out I was "ready" to see that my PSU/MOBO/CPU are dead from this situation but they seem to work nice. What the h was that, actually? Did the GPU short smth? It was installed properly as any other GPU. The problem with M2 & GPUs & x8/x8 was already here, that's why I got 630 GPU in. It never had any problems with itself for years and 10+ builds it was in.
On my MOBO it uses the built-in graphics and ignores the x16 slot. Disabling integrated graphics means no display from any source and I’ll need to reset the CMOS.
It seems there may be a minor grounding concern affecting feedback. Checking if the motherboard is properly grounded inside the case could help, even though it might be inconvenient.
