PCIe 8x4x4 expansion for NAS setup Bifurcation configuration details
Your Z390 UD supports 8x4x4, meaning the entire 16x channel is divided into eight 4x4 configurations. Adding a Quad NVMe PCIe adapter will likely connect three drives and leave one slot open, which may be used for the fourth drive or integrated into the PCH.
You're missing a GPU? Then display three SSDs on the card. You require four by four by four slots to make them all functional (especially if the card has a PLX chip).
Using x8x4x4 allows up to 3 m.2 drives with these adapters. The additional x4 ports are routed through the chipset.
That’s what I’m aiming for, at least for now. Just experimenting with NAS today—I’ll get it right later.
