The x8 indicates the actual number of lanes in the slot. Reducing the PCI version won’t increase that count. You can set an x16 slot to perform worse than x16 by turning off certain physical lanes, but it can’t create more lanes.

In theory it could work, but currently there are no consumer products available for this because they would cost more than a typical computer system.

I understand your concern. I was referring to something similar to a riser, which combines two lower bandwidth channels into one higher speed channel. I apologize for the unclear wording earlier.
