With extra components available I could assemble an additional PC for my relative. I can upgrade my 5600+B350 to B450/B550 models. The alternatives look identical in price—B450 Gigabyte Aorus Elite at ATX B550 and Asus TUF Wi-Fi. For a 25% higher cost, B550M plus Asus TUF Wi-Fi offers the same value. Is the distinction limited to PCIe3.0 versus PCIe4.0? (Just for gaming purposes, not for work.)

Your system seems to run smoothly without any performance issues from the VRMs, so keeping your current motherboard is fine. However, if you plan to upgrade later—such as moving to a 5800X3D—I’d recommend switching to something like the Gigabyte B550M AORUS ELITE Micro ATX AM4 board (PCPartPicker). For your question, PCIe Gen 4 isn’t necessary in 2023. What graphics card are you using? It could be irrelevant depending on your setup.

PCIe 4.0 mainly affects how fast storage operates. Unless you have a scenario that needs frequent transfers of big data between drives, it’s probably not essential. This could shift if more games rely on direct storage, but currently it doesn’t offer noticeable gains over PCIe 3.0 in the games that use it.

Only the newest GPUs might reach PCI 3 speeds. PCI 4 offers double speed without guaranteeing double performance—it just means it can manage more data flow. Using a second PC with what you already have is considerate and extends the life of powerful hardware. Upgrading later is possible, but right now it’s wise to maximize the potential of what you have.

Is this the AMD storeMI version? I’m not planning to replace the CPU anytime soon—it’s really great with the B350, 5600, and RX6800, which I recently upgraded to.

Yes, that setup works well with a 4080 and an NVMe Gen4 drive.

This decision stems from their PCIe interface design. Rather than downgrading to the lower standard Gen 3, they opted to reduce performance by half. If your CPU only supports Gen 3 speeds, bandwidth is now halved. As noted by some commenters: modern GPUs already hit saturation at 3.0x8 (actually, I recall someone experienced saturation on a 2080 running 3.0x8, though I can't verify the source). In such scenarios, using earlier generation cards with PCIe Gen 3 16x would likely yield better performance, though this comes with trade-offs in power consumption and future compatibility.

StoreMI serves as a method of SSD caching to enhance HDD performance by utilizing a compact SSD as a buffer. DirectStorage is a Windows feature enabling the graphics card to access storage directly, especially NVMe drives. Currently, only Forspoken supports this technology, though its implementation isn't optimal. In the near future, more titles might adopt it. Some believe PCIe Gen 4 will be necessary for compatibility because consoles use Gen 4 drives, but many rumors suggest Gen 3 drives should suffice for most upcoming releases. The idea that a SATA SSD can work without NVMe is also mentioned, though performance drops are noted. This remains speculation; I wouldn't upgrade for DirectStorage until we see games requiring Gen 4 drives widely. If your setup runs smoothly and you don’t need the extra features, stick with it. A B350 board in 2023 is perfectly fine—it offers strong value from a Ryzen 5000 processor without costly upgrades. The RX 6800 handles Gen 3 efficiently, and even a 4090 only sees minor slowdowns. If your system meets your needs now, keep it. Upgrade only when future requirements demand it. Until then, appreciate the current configuration.

DirectStorage is a Microsoft API enabling direct data transfer from a drive to the GPU. Nvidia launched it as RTX IO previously, though technically it's their adaptation of Microsoft DS. Forespoken and possibly Diablo 4 were among the early titles to adopt it, but its performance benefits remain limited.
