PCI-E supports older versions, that should work. A refurbished unit around $130 is typical.

According to Intel, this is the maximum version they support: https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/...0-ghz.html It can handle up to 16 lanes, and using x8 should be feasible depending on the configuration. Performance may be limited in leveraging the GPU fully, but it should function adequately.

I was in school when I shared this post, and now I'm back at home checking my specs—my setup has PCIe 2.0 x16, so an i7 2600 should be fine.

The CPU is designed to work with PCIe, not the reverse. It does backward compatibility for PCIe 2.0, which means the GTX 1060 should function properly. However, the CPU might be a bit slow, creating a minor performance gap between it and the GPU.

It works well, the i7 remains solid and the 1060 is a great choice. You won’t find high FPS at 4K, but it’s fine for 1080p games.
