PCIe 1x connection issue (sound card fails after switching from 16x to 1x)
I discovered this discussion, but I have the exact opposite situation and I doubt the cause is identical! Details: ASRock B550M Pro4 (https://www.asrock.com/mb/AMD/B550M Pro4/index.asp#Specification) AMD Ryzen 7 5700X G.Skill Ripjaws V 32GB (4 x 8GB) DDR4-3200 NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Samsung 980 SSD 500GB M.2 in the Gen4 x4 M2_1 slot Kingston SNV2S 2TB M.2 in the Gen3 x2 M2_2 slot Sound Blaster Z SB1500 3 SSD's are SanDisk Ultra II plus two 980s in a RAID setup on Windows 10 64-bit Home 650W 80+ bronze. I had already updated the BIOS when I completed the build to version 2.3. Both M.2 slots M2_1 and M2_2 are installed with NVMe drives, but I experienced this problem before and after adding the M2_2 drive. The manual suggests it’s either SATA 5 & 6 or M2_2 due to lane sharing. None of the ports 5 and 6 are connected, yet I have drives plugged into 1, 2, and 3. After installing the Sound Blaster Z in the 16x slot, the GPU had enough airflow and everything functioned properly. I switched it to the 1x slot and faced the same issue—card not detected and not listed. My BIOS isn’t very clear, so it doesn’t show any connected devices. I moved the Sound Blaster Z using a PCIe 1x extension cable, which worked fine in the 16x slot but not with the 1x. Once I reconnected it to the 16x, it operated as before, until now. Now I need to move it to the 1x slot. I’m planning to add another M.2 PCI card later. After reading this thread, I have two questions: How can I fix the problem where the 1x slot doesn’t recognize the card? And if I resolve it, will the third M.2 PCI adapter also work? I’m not sure how reliable it will be. I’m tech-savvy enough to try things but often end up complicating things. I understand the last comment, but I’m missing the specifics of my hardware. The manual only mentions lane sharing for M2_2 and SATA 5/6, nothing about M2_1. It says the 16x slots support NVMe drives and boot drives, and moving it improved GPU temps enough to fit an extra fan for cooler operation. My aim is to get the Sound Blaster Z running in the 1x slot with the extension cable, and I want a SABRENT EC-PCIE NVMe M.2 SSD connected via PCIe to the 16x slot. I’m okay with the SNV2S speeds even at double speed on M2_2—it’s affordable and fast storage.
I understand your feedback, but I didn’t fully grasp what you intended. I spent time explaining the situation clearly and detailing my attempts to resolve it. Your points about complexity and multiple possibilities apply to all built electronics. No part of my response was useful. If you’re unsure about what I’m saying, feel free to ask. The photo I shared shows the problem, and its connection is now clear—it’s running on the 16x, while the 1x isn’t working. It seems to be a PCI lane issue, but the manual doesn’t offer much beyond noting that 5 and 6 are connected to m.2_2. Consider looking elsewhere for more guidance.
