He got an old Dell Poweredge T710 from an auction. It’s packed with RAM and quite large. The machine boots up and shows all the memory, suggesting it’s in good shape—though a detailed test would be wise. The CPUs are dual Xeon x5660. He plans to bring over his existing systems, repair them, and donate them to charities. This is his first server he’s acquired, and I know RAM from this model often doesn’t fit standard desktop boards. Some boards can handle R memory, but most reports indicate compatibility issues. The board has an older processor, which might mean it needs a more expensive case than expected. Anyone have suggestions for standard desktops or motherboards that support PC3L-10600R RAM? He also mentioned having several 8GB sticks, hoping to upgrade to larger capacities like 16GB or 32GB.

The presence of an 'R' at the end confirms ECC RAM compatibility, mainly found in enterprise servers. It seems this feature isn't available on standard desktop systems.

Yes, even desktops with a socket can't support registered ECC memory. The top models are LGA1356 and LGA2011 v0/v2 Xeons (Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge). AMD server CPUs using DDR3 rely on older architecture designs, likely requiring DDR4 from Threaripper or EPYC.
