PC won't POST
My computer isn't starting after encountering some problems while playing games. It's been over a year and has always run well until now. I recently moved to a new location, so I had to send my whole setup via a courier service. When I got it, everything was fine. Specs: MB: B550 AORUS PRO AC (Rev 1.0), CPU: Ryzen 5 5600X, GPU: Gigabyte RTX3070Ti, RAM: Corsair Vengance DDR4-3600MHz (8GB), OS: Windows 10 64-bit. Today, when I began using it, I encountered BSOD errors with the code "VIDEO TDR FAILURE." The next time I started, a BIOS update appeared in the Aorus app manager. I applied the update and restarted the system. The issue began when it failed to POST. There was a clear red line on the VGA port. After that, I made a flash drive with the latest BIOS firmware and attempted to flash it manually. It succeeded, and I saw the login prompt for Windows. Before logging in, another BSOD occurred (same error code). Then it stopped POSTing again. I tried clearing the CMOS, connecting the pins with a screwdriver for 20 seconds, but it didn't help. Eventually, I removed the CMOS battery and it worked. I was able to restart and it functioned properly. I thought the problem was resolved then. However, while playing games, the monitor went completely dark as if the signal was lost, and the keyboard stayed stuck (the Num lock light remained on even when I pressed it). I had to turn off the system manually and tried again, but it still wouldn't POST. I removed the CMOS battery once more, and it worked this time, but when I restarted, it returned to the same situation. I'm running out of ideas. Can you assist me?
Consult your board manufacturer's support page for RAM compatibility assistance. I've experienced a comparable problem since setting up my system. My machine uses an Asus TUF Gaming B550-PLUS with 2x16 DDR4-3200 CL16 Crucial Ballistix. It appears my board can handle 32GB at 2666 Mhz (DOCP/XMP off), but only 16GB at 3200 Mhz. My board also supports 32GB of Patriot Viper Steel at 3200, yet not 32GB of Crucial Ballistix. Odd. So far, I've turned off DOCP and managed to boot into Windows twelve times without issues—successful shutdowns, restarts, and reboots. Two options exist: 1: the bios update was corrupted. Please redo it if possible. It’s likely there’s a flashback or another feature issue. If the board is unusable, it should be noted in the manual. Usually a USB key is needed. 2: the update was processed correctly but had a mistake or another issue at the same time. Did you receive any post codes when it didn’t post?
Check these RAM options available on Amazon and ASUS sites. Focus on Crucial, Patriot, speed settings, or specific configurations.
I wouldn't recommend avoiding the purchase. It seems Asus handles memory controllers well. A 2666 MHz is still quite fast, and I believe 32GB at that speed is a better option than 16GB at 3200 MHz. I'm just pleased it was straightforward—hoping for a reliable fix, though I won't be fully confident until at least thirty restarts.
video tdr failure relates to the TDR module checking the GPU status. You might disable it temporarily. This involves editing the registry at a specific path. If you're comfortable, copy the key location from there. For more details, refer to the registry entry: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\GraphicsDrivers. Setting the TdrLevel to 0 disables it, which helped in a similar situation. If you can't log in without BSOD, try safe mode instead.
I’d say 16gb works fine for most needs, but I’m not completely sure it will always be the case. I usually keep my devices for a longer period.
