This discussion centers around upgrading a monitor, specifically moving from a lower resolution to a higher one like 4K or ultrawide. The core argument is about justifying the investment by considering the value of an older machine. Several individuals have shared experiences where they’ve leveraged resale values to offset the cost of new hardware.

One user, using a 34" LG monitor (a “BTW” – presumably referring to a BTO or Build-to-Order model), initially hesitated about ultrawide displays but ultimately opted for it while keeping their budget in mind. They chose 1080p/2560x1080 resolution to avoid significant graphics card expenses, prioritizing good gaming framerates. This approach allows for a balance between visual quality and hardware costs.

Another user detailed selling an older Ryzen 2700X machine – a “beast” according to their description – to recoup over half the cost of a new upgrade. They kept their existing graphics card, illustrating a strategic approach to maximizing value from previous investments. A similar strategy was employed in another instance where a user sold a 6700K machine and used the proceeds to cover a significant portion of a subsequent Ryzen upgrade.

The key takeaway is that selling older hardware can be a viable method for funding upgrades, particularly when considering the trade-offs between resolution, graphics card performance, and overall cost. The potential resale value of the existing system should be factored into any upgrade decision.

The GPU and monitor work well like mentioned earlier in this thread. However, a 980 performs a little better than a 1060, so probably 20% off a 1070 which = a 2060 +/-... So absolute minimum I’d look to would be a 2070 andrewsasseman: My honest answer would be to upgrade it almost completely. Any particular reason? Or just because? A “complete” upgrade to that system would be a horrendous waste of money for the performance gains.

andrewsasseman :
The GPU and monitor work well like mentioned earlier in this thread
That;s not what I asked though?
While I disagree, If you feel the entire system is better overhauled, then please elaborate.
Unfortunately:
Shed's no information on your thought process.
