Either choice works fine.
My main storage is a Samsung 970 EVO Plus with 500gb, and I use a 1tb Samsung 980 as my game drive. (Yes, I also have some games on the 970 Evo, but most of the big titles are on the second drive.)
Game files are becoming larger, reaching up to 200gb per title. Having a 2 or 4tb drive would be beneficial.
It’s often wise to store your games on a separate drive from the operating system, so you don’t have to re-download them if something goes wrong. You can just use the GUI for things like Steam and point it back to the correct drive.
