PC Upgrade suggestions/guidance
Hi All,
I just bought this PC and am thinking about some upgrades. I’d like your thoughts on possible improvements, especially for the processor.
Current configuration:
Motherboard: Gigabyte B550 Gaming X V2
OS: Windows 11 Home
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600
RAM: 32GB at 3600 MHz (two 16GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro)
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT Mech 2x OC Edition
HDD: Netac SSD 1TB
SSD: 250GB NVME M.2 (R-3350MB/s, W-1350MB/s)
Power Supply: Golden Field GPG 80+ Gold 650W
Monitor: ACER Nitro XV282KK @ 144Hz
Should I consider upgrading the processor? If yes, which model would you suggest—Ryzen 5 5600X3D, Ryzen 7 5700X3D, Ryzen 7 5800X3D, or another?
Also, would switching to a Samsung 980 Pro SSD make a noticeable difference?
I’m also worried about possible bottlenecks.
Any general tips or recommendations would be helpful.
For gaming purposes?
Ryzen 7 5800X3D would be the best option on that platform, though it may not face a classical "bottleneck" with a more powerful GPU for higher resolutions, speeds, and settings.
Regarding SSDs, a larger NVME drive is preferable so you can install all games for improved performance; speed isn't the main concern here.
I'd say the system is fairly balanced. It really depends on your specific needs.
If you're focusing on video editing, CAD, or photo editing, you might benefit from a better CPU.
For pro gaming at 4K or higher, you should upgrade both CPU and GPU, along with RAM to a faster frequency.
Replacing the SATA SSD with an NVMe drive could help, though it's usually not essential for significant performance gains.
You can easily verify if your games are limited by your CPU or GPU. Lower the graphics settings; if the FPS improves, the issue is likely with the GPU. If the FPS remains unchanged, it points to the CPU. The 5700X3D offers better value compared to the 5800X3D, delivering roughly 95% of its performance.
Keep in mind that performance varies across titles. Not every game runs faster on the 5800x3d, and some may not utilize the additional cache effectively. It's useful to see which games benefit from the new CPU and whether you notice improvements. With this in mind, most games still show a slight drop in 1% FPS, which generally reflects smoother gameplay.
The 5700x3d is similar to the 5800x3d but has a lower TDP of 65w. You may also consider upgrading your CPU cooler, since the x3d components tend to generate more heat compared to non-x3d parts.
Okay. Good luck. It's a stellar chip, so you've not made a bad call at all.
