PC suddenly freezes displaying a black or green screen
Hey everyone, I’m facing a recurring issue where my PC freezes with either a black or green screen. Last week, while playing Sons of Forest for about three hours, the game froze on a black screen after rebooting. Even when joining a session, it would freeze again. After turning off the PC and waiting a short time, I played for 30 minutes without any problems. Recently, while playing BeamNG DICE, the PC froze after just 10 minutes, but this time it showed a green screen. I’ve never experienced issues with these games before—I’ve spent hundreds of hours playing.
I ran a chkdsk scan and everything seemed fine. My system temperatures during gaming are around 56°C on the GPU and 59-62°C on the CPU, and I haven’t done any overclocking. The problem started suddenly about 12 hours ago, even though I’ve kept my specs updated recently. My GPU was purchased in May 2024 and has never crashed. The last driver update was in August, and it’s been two months without any issues.
Could anyone help me resolve this? It only happens during gameplay, not when browsing or watching YouTube. My PC runs perfectly otherwise.
Details about my setup:
- Intel i5 8600K
- Z370 Asrock Extreme4
- Gigabyte RX6600 Eagle
- Corsair 2666mhz 2x8GB RAM
- Seasonic M12ii EVO 520W
- Patriot Scorch M2 256GB (system)
- Team MP33 512GB (storage)
Gigabyte RX6600 Eagle and Seasonic m12ii evo 520w should be swapped for a more dependable power supply. The Seasonic unit performed well in the past, but with newer components it’s better to set it aside soon. Also, it would be useful to know how old the PSU was and what it previously powered before the RX6600.
I've previously used timespy, furmark, and heaven around May after purchasing the GPU, and everything worked then. However, I plan to attempt running it again.
The psu is five years old. Before the RX6600, it was a GTX 1080 FTW Hybrid with 220w tdp on gpu-z during tasks like furmark or timespy. The 6600 only draws up to 100w max, and since I watch on a 60hz TV, the tdp never exceeded 70-80w. Yeah, I've increased the ram speed to 3000mhz, but since I mainly play light games such as beamng and assetto corsa, I don't feel the need for an upgrade anytime soon.
