I’m facing a problem where my PC completely powers off when I run FurMark or play tough games. It cuts off instantly, almost as if it was interrupted by an electrical surge.
Here’s what I have:
Processor: Intel i7-8700K
Graphics: EVGA GTX 1080 Ti
Motherboard: ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-F GAMING (BIOS v2801)
RAM: 16 GB G.Skill DDR4 @ 2133 MHz
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2 (650W Platinum)
Cooling: Air cooling, temperatures are normal (CPU 33°C, motherboard 28°C in BIOS)
I’ve tried everything:
- Confirmed temperatures under load are fine.
- Enabled XMP in BIOS for proper RAM speeds.
- Checked power connections to GPU and motherboard.
- Updated NVIDIA GPU drivers and motherboard BIOS.
- Ran FurMark, which always shuts down immediately.
What I’ve noticed:
This system has been stable for years, handling demanding games without problems. The shutdown is sudden, not a thermal or blue screen issue. It works well under light loads (browsing, simple tasks).
I’m wondering if the problem might be with the PSU, GPU, or motherboard. I’d appreciate any advice on diagnosing or fixing this.

Evga models in their top-tier lines sometimes have quality issues, but if your unit is defective or covered by warranty, it’s not a major concern. To confirm if the PSU is the cause, you might want to borrow a solid 750W unit from someone else and see if the problem disappears.

Those are excellent ideas. My system is around 7 or 8 years old, so the power supply matches its age. My son has a gaming PC with a PSU I’m familiar with, so I can test swapping it to see if the problem lies with the PSU. Are the connections in the picture correct?
It turned out the PSU was the issue. I tested with my son's 750W and it worked perfectly. I’ve played games and run FurMark without any problems. Now I’m checking if my 650W can power his PC. His only has a 1060W, while I have a 1080TI. The 1060 should draw less power, so maybe my 650W PSU is enough? If not, I’ll need to buy a new one.
