A week ago I experienced a shutdown issue with my i7 9700K. Temperatures dropped by 14°C, but the CPU remained unstable. Every time I boot up, it crashes into the blue screen and stays there until I reach recovery mode. Once stable, games and benchmarks work fine until the next restart. After the shutdown, I didn’t overclock the CPU again—it previously ran at 5GHz without issues, now it freezes instantly during games or benchmark runs. I changed the mounting pressure, which slightly improved stability, but after a few hours testing it returned to its original state. The CPU isn’t being overclocked, and since I’m using 9th gen OC frames, the cooler isn’t the main cause. Help would be appreciated.

Yes, you're using direct die cooling. You've considered reattaching the IHS and tested it—if it functions properly, the issue is likely the mounting pressure.

Considering a CPU swap would be my final resort if other options fail. Most times, applying force with the cooler's thumb screws was a tight balance between generating heat and risking a crash during startup. With the frame attached to the CPU, fine adjustments become much more difficult. Is pressure probably the main cause of my issue—or just the beginning before trying further solutions? Do you have any advice on applying just the right amount of force?

Based on the amount of force applied, Belleville washers can be beneficial at times. I recommend starting with pressures between 2 to 4 inch pounds per screw. Conducting mounting tests in the bios is ideal, as they require only one core load. Adjust your pressure while monitoring temperature changes. You may notice slight differences in tightness among screws due to uneven TIM displacement on one side or end. Reassess the mounting every 12 to 24 hours for several days to prevent gradual loosening from TIM movement.
