Today I powered on my PC and it crashed immediately with a BSOD saying "inaccessible boot drive." After restarting, my motherboard status light changed from orange to red within about ten seconds. The only way through this was resetting the CMOS and then entering recovery mode, or using BIOS to exit. Rebooting fixed the issue, but the first boot was slow and choppy. Even when I didn’t have lag in the desktop, programs would freeze or crash when I closed them. I can play games without problems, but there are still random stutters and freezes when I switch tabs. Eventually, all programs would lock up completely, forcing me to restart everything from scratch. So far I’ve checked all RAM slots, swapped them, reset the CMOS, but I don’t have access to test another GPU or CPU. Some applications have been behaving oddly, with parts not rendering until I move them slightly or restart. Someone said it’s the boot drive failing, but no professional has examined it yet—it’s a Kingston NVMe from the KC.3000 line.
Use an app to examine the SMART table for the drive, such as CrystalDiskInfo. If needed, share a screenshot here. Consider a memory check just in case. Look for any unusual errors or warnings in the Windows event log.
It appears the issue stems from a failing drive affecting memory setup, leading to hangs and eventual crashes. There are no obvious signs in the logs, only unexpected shutdown errors from NVIDIA, likely caused by the power supply not consistently supplying power to the PC. These crashes seem random and mostly occur during intensive tasks like loading screens.
The drive appears normal, no 0E Media or data integrity issues detected. What about the other drive? Have you run a memtest? Are you using EXPO? Consider disabling it to check if it resolves the problem. Do you have the most recent BIOS? AMD CPUs may be sensitive to RAM configurations.
I haven't run a memtest yet; the other drive is just storage. At this point, the PC is about a year old. When I installed Windows, that drive was already set up and saved the boot image instead of the new drive. I'm not sure if that matters. Expo is always on, which has been the case since the beginning. I turn it on every time I clear the CMOS as well. Since then, the Kingston drive hasn't appeared in the boot priority list, though it showed during the Windows installation.
It's been more than a year, and the RAM is included in the compatible options. The PC began showing odd problems after the latest Windows update, which I initially thought was a bad patch. Shortly after, code 14/15 started appearing. Flashing the BIOS yesterday didn't help.
